Propaganda Analysis Exercise ~~
Please
print the following two speeches and bring them to class.
George
W. Bush
John
Kerry
Consider the readings
we've been discussing in classparticularly "How to Detect Propaganda"
and George Orwell's "Politics and the English Language." In light
of these readings, analyze two political speeches, one by George
W. Bush and one by John
Kerry, to determine the degree to which the language is manipulative by
observing
1. Propagandistic
techniques described by the IPA:
- Name-Calling
- Glittering Generality
- Transfer
- Testimonial
- Plain Folks
- Card Stacking
- Band Wagon
2. These additional
"logical fallacies" discussed in class:
- Fear
- Bad logic
- Unwarranted
Extrapolation (a conclusion based on insufficient evidence)
- Unsupported
Assertion (an opinion that's presented as a fact; that is, an opinion unsupported
by concrete, convincing evidence)
3. "Corruptive"
language as described by George Orwell in "Politics and the English Language":
- "Ugly"
prose-stale or imprecise language (clichés, vague abstractions)
- Euphemistic
language
- Pretentious
language
- Evasive or "empty"
language
4. Euphemism
as described by William Lutz in his analysis of doublespeak.
5. Any of the
sell tactics you observed in our unit on advertising.
